Despite geopolitical tensions, economic pressures, and the growing challenges of climate change and energy security, Türkiye is moving ahead with its ambition to play a leading role in shaping the global climate and energy agenda.
Two important developments this week highlight this direction. At the Istanbul Climate Finance Summit, COP31 President-designate Murat Kurum called for urgent action to close the global climate finance gap, noting that estimated needs of $7.5–9 trillion far exceed current funding of approximately $1.9 trillion. Türkiye’s COP31 agenda will focus on translating commitments into investment and practical projects, including through the Climate Implementation Bridge, which aims to connect developing countries with financing and support climate-resilient urban development.
At the same time, International Energy Agency Executive Director Fatih Birol has presented the upcoming COP31 summit in Antalya as a historic opportunity to advance a global electricity target of 35 percent of total energy consumption by 2035. If adopted, the proposed “35 by 35” target could become a landmark Antalya Decision, strengthening energy security, accelerating electrification, and helping countries reduce dependence on external energy supplies.
Together, these developments reflect Türkiye’s determination to move beyond hosting international events toward facilitating concrete global agreements, mobilizing investment, and building bridges between climate ambition and implementation. As Antalya prepares to host COP31 from 9 to 20 November 2026, the country has an opportunity to demonstrate how international leadership can bring governments, financial institutions, and development partners together around shared solutions for a more resilient and sustainable future.
