In the Shadow of Gaza: The Regionalization of War and the Ruins of Peace and Diplomacy

Ankara | 14 April 2026

The Cultural Diplomacy Forum (CDF), in partnership with ODAM at Ankara University, hosted a high-level dialogue exploring how the war in Gaza is reshaping regional conflict, diplomacy, and international law.

The discussion featured Francesca Albanese, widely recognized for her principled stance on Palestine and international law, and was moderated by Can Öztaş, a retired Turkish diplomat and legal expert.

Albanese described Gaza not only as a humanitarian crisis but as a critical test of the international system, highlighting the erosion of legal norms and the growing normalization of impunity.

The session included insights from Özge Genç and Betül Doğan Akkaş, who examined the expanding regional impact of the conflict and the shifting meaning of ceasefire, peace, and diplomacy.

Key themes focused on the regionalization of war, declining trust in diplomatic frameworks, and the widening gap between legal principles and political realities.

The event concluded with a call for more honest, accountable, and principled engagement to restore the relevance of law and diplomacy in addressing ongoing crises.
